Provence Rosé Wine 2025?

Even though rosé wine is now drunk year-round, we are entering the peak season, so how did Provence rosé wines turn out in the 2025 vintage?

What was the important weather like in 2025?

The trend continues from previous years with every month of the year having average temperatures equal to or above normal. The positive thing is that in 2025 there were no severe cold periods during the spring, which is so sensitive for the vine, but instead the beginning of the year was wet and then heavy rains came in May with the worst 230 mm of rain in just one hour!

The wet start to the year unfortunately meant that the powdery mildew pressure was high and even before the heavy rains in May, some winegrowers had been forced to spray the vines five times!

The summer was then dry with several heat waves, the last one in mid-August being so hot that the harvest volume ended up 10% below average. The rain returned in early September and then just after mid-September.

Tasted rosé wines bought in Provence

When we left Provence in mid-April, we bought eight rosé wines with us for this tasting and we know that these wines usually have a good quality:

  • Angelico, Château Paquette, €12 (SEK 132)
  • Belle Poule rosé, Château du Rouet, €14 (SEK 155)
  • Corail, Château de Roquefort, €14.5 (SEK 160)
  • Premiere, Figuiere, Famillie Combard, €16.3 (SEK 179)
  • Château Pas de Cerf, Château Pas de Cerf, €16.4 (SEK 180)
  • Château Grand Boise rosé, Château Grand Boise, €16.5 (SEK 182)
  • Mas de Cadenet, Mas de Cadenet, €17.6 (SEK 194)
  • Cuvee Clarendon Rosé, Domaine Gavoty, €18.5 (SEK 204)

Supplement with Provence rosé wines purchased at Systembolaget

We first supplemented the wines we bought in Provence with the four biggest sellers in 2025 at the Swedish monopoly Systembolaget:

  1. Domaine de Collavery (110 SEK) from the Quatre Tours cooperative
  2. The brand wine Cuveé Madame (139 SEK) produced for Contemporary Wines Sweden AB
  3. The Négociant wine Minuty M (179 SEK) from Château Minuty
  4. Négociantvinet Chavin (SEK 139) from the producer Pierre Chavin located in Hérault in Occitanie (formerly Languedoc)

Supplement with Provence rosé wines purchased via Winefinder

Later we also bought five wines from the importer Winefinder, four négociant wines from Pigoudet:

  • Premiere (149 SEK)
  • La Chapelle (169 SEK)
  • Princess (169 SEK)
  • The Oratory (229 SEK)

and the wine Sainte-Anne (199 SEK) from the Château la Tour de l’Eveque.

So, what was the conclusion about vintage 2025?

The Provençal rosé wine vintage 2025 is general very good with a fresh aromatic aroma and many wines have a good concentration which means that the first taste impression is a feeling of fruity sweetness even though the wine is completely dry. But unfortunately, there are 3-4 wines that fall out of the frame, maybe some of these were bottle defective or came from a defective batch?

The acidity level is good, although you can now see via the QR code on the back that many of the wines have been “supported” by adding acid. The wines have the freshness typical of Provence. Most of the wines also have a good and fresh aftertaste.

Tasting comments

Further down there are information and notes about the wines tasted, the wines are listed in order of score. The scale used for the score is 0-20. Since I’m a wine nerd, points will be deducted if there are too much of artificial aromas, such as notes of candy or far too much grapefruit. The eight wines bought in Provence and the four bought at Systembolaget were first tasted half-blind in two rounds and then all at once to calibrate the score.

The wines purchased from Winefinder were tasted two weeks later, also half-blind, and together with Belle Poule and Clarendon to also calibrate the scores.

If the price is stated in € without brackets, the wine was purchased in Provence and if the price is stated in SEK without brackets, the wine was purchased at Systembolaget or via Winefinder. (1€ = 11 SEK).

The colour of the wine is only indicated if it deviates from the typical light peach/melon colour. The colours are based on the brand-new colour palette developed by the CIVP (Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence) and where pomelo is a grapefruit variety.

Affordability:

The most affordable all-round wines are Domaine de Collavery, Belle Poule, Pigoudet Premiere and Chavin.

Best wine:

Unfortunately, the price comes with the quality. The best wine is Clarendon followed by Belle Poule, Pigoudet l’Oratoire, Corail and Château Grand Boise rosé.

1. Princesse, 169 SEK (15€), 10P
(Château Pigoudet, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Alkoholhalt: 12,5%, Syrah 39%, Grenache 23%, Cinsault 19%, Cabernet sauvignon 19%)

Light lychee colour. Faint, dull unpleasant aroma, slightly rotten. Faint indefinable taste and short aftertaste. Is the bottle defective or does the wine come from a defective batch?

2. Mas de Cadenet, €17.6 (SEK 194), 10.5P
(Mas de Cadenet, Côtes de Provence – Sainte-Victoire, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah)

Light pearl colour. Faint aroma with peach and after a while a chemical aroma like nail polish emerged. Faint, bland taste and short aftertaste. Is the bottle defective or does the wine come from a defective batch? Because it is from a good and recognized producer?

3. Cuvée Madame Sélection de Mademoiselle, SEK 139 (€12.6), 11.5P
(NA/Contemporary Wines AB, Côtes de Provence, Alcohol content: 13%, Cinsault 40%, Grenache 30%, Syrah 20%, Carignan 10%)

Faint berry aroma with candy sweetness similar to fudge caramel, peach, and some red berries. The red berries and candy notes can also be found in the taste. Relatively short aftertaste with negative bitterness. A little too much candy notes.

4. Sainte-Anne, 199 SEK (18€), 11,5P
(Cotes de Provence, Château la Tour de l’Eveque, Alkoholhalt: 13%, Cinsault 46%, Grenache 34%, Mourvedre 12%, Syrah 4%, Rolle 2%, Semillon 2% %)

Stronger apricot colour. The aroma is a bit thick and berry with strawberry, some sweetness, a little fudge caramel and a faint hint of nail polish. Berry flavour with a little low acidity that makes the wine not perceived as fresh. Different aroma and a little low acidity. A disappointment as the same producer makes the famous Pétale de Rose which almost 40 years ago was the first light Provence rosé wine.

5. Minuty M, SEK 179 (€16.3), 11.5+P
(Château Minuty, Côtes de Provence, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache 50%, Cinsault 20%, Syrah 20%, Tibouren 10%)

Light lychee colour. Slightly dull aroma with peach, strawberry, and a little candy sweetness. Not so fresh on the nose. Mild, slightly berry flavour of red berries. Relatively short aftertaste with a slight negative bitterness.

6. La Chapelle, 169 SEK (15€), 12,5P
(Château Pigoudet, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Alkoholhalt: 12,5%, Grenache 34%, Cinsault 33%, Syrah 24%, Cabernet sauvignon 10%)

Berry aroma with red berries, apricot, rose and a hint of candy like fudge. Berry attack, balanced acidity and with a medium-long aftertaste.

7. Domaine de Collavery, 110 SEK (10€), 12.5+P
(Quatre Tours, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache and other grape varieties)

Fresh, berry aroma with red berries, grapefruit, and a touch of fruity sweetness. Fresh fruity attack in the mouth, relatively long berry aftertaste with a touch of tannins.

8. Angelico, €12 (SEK 132), 12.5+P
(Château Paquette, Côtes de Provence, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache 54%, Tibouren 24%, Mourvèdre 22%)

Slightly stronger pomelo colour. Slightly faint berry aroma of red berries, apricot, spice, and a slightly perfumed tone. Relatively full-bodied rosé wine with a taste of apricot and a little perfume. Relatively long aftertaste. Slightly different character, is this due to the relatively high proportion of the Tibouren grape?

9. Premiere, €16.3 (SEK 179), 13P
(Figuiere, Famillie Combard, Cote de Provence, Alcohol content: 13%, Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre)

Light lychee colour. Slightly faint aroma that is both fruity and fresh, with citrus, strawberry, peach, and a slight hint of candy. Good acidity, fruity sweetness in the attack in the mouth and with a taste of peach. Relatively long berry aftertaste with a hint of tannins.

10. Château Pas de Cerf, €16.4 (SEK 180), 13P
(Château Pas de Cerf, Cote de Provence, Alcohol content: 13%, Grenache 70%, Mourvèdre 15%, Tibouren 10%, Cinsault 5%)

Fresh, relatively fruity aroma with citrus, peach, red berries, and a little spice. Fresh and fruity attack in the mouth with a little creaminess. Relatively long aftertaste with saltiness and a bit of tannins. The freshness and aftertaste make the wine suitable both as an aperitif and with food.

11. Chavin, SEK 139 (€12.6) 13P
(Domaines Pierre Chavin, Côtes de Provence, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Mourvèdre 30%, Syrah 30%, Cinsault 20%, Grenache 20%)

Berry aroma with strawberry and a hint of fudge. Fruity attack in the mouth with red berries. Medium to long aftertaste.

12. Pigoudet Premiere, SEK 149 (€13.5), 13+P
(Château Pigoudet, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Cabernet sauvignon)

Fresh aroma with peach, citrus and a hint of rose. Barely medium-bodied wine. Fresh attack in the mouth and a medium to long fresh aftertaste.

13. Château Grand Boise rosé, €16.5 (SEK 182), 13.5P
(Château Grand Boise, Côtes de Provence – Cru Sainte-Victoire, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache 55%, Syrah 45%)

Berry aroma – red berries with a spiciness and a little sweetness. Berry attack in the mouth and with a long, fresh and berry aftertaste.

14. Corail, €14.5 (SEK 160), 13.5P
(Château de Roquefort, Côtes de Provence, Alcohol content: 13%, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Clairette, Rolle)

Stronger apricot colour. Berry aroma with peach, strawberry, fennel, rose and a bit of fruity sweetness. The taste is also berry and the aftertaste is relatively long. Corail has always been a good and slightly different rosé wine and it is pleasing that the new owners are continuing with the wine style.

15. Pigoudet l’Oratoire, SEK 229 (€20.8), 13.5P
(Château Pigoudet, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Alcohol content: 12.5%, Grenache 30%, Syrah 25%, Cabernet sauvignon 25%, Cinsault 20%)

Stronger pomelo colour with red elements. Berry aroma with red berries, apricot, some grapefruit, violet, and a hint of candy. Relatively full-bodied wine with fresh acidity and with berry notes. Relatively long aftertaste with fresh acidity. A distinctive rosé to accompany food where the richness of flavour needs to be matched with a suitable dish.

16. Belle Poule rosé, €14 (SEK 155), 14P
(Château du Rouet, Cote de Provence Frejus, Alcohol content: 13%, Grenache 30%, Syrah 40%, Tibouren 30%)

Berry aroma with apricot, strawberry, and a little spice. Fresh and fruity attack in the mouth with red berries. Relatively long aftertaste with berries, but still fresh. Very good standard Provence rosé.

17. Cuvee Clarendon Rosé, €18.5 (SEK 204), 14+P
(Domaine Gavoty, Côtes de Provence, Alcohol content: 13.5%, Grenache 50%, Cinsault 50%)

Berry aroma with strawberry, nectarine, rose, aniseed spice, and a touch of fruity sweetness. Full-bodied and with a slightly higher fresh acidity. Fruity attack in the mouth with red berries and spice. Long aftertaste with some tannins. A very good vintage of Clarendon. A very good rosé especially with food.
